Shining a Spotlight on R&D
Growing our research expenditures and our opportunities to work together
Research is our founding principle, outlined in 1876 in the inaugural address of the university’s first president, Daniel Coit Gilman. It remains central to our mission, with the university investing more money in research and development than any other American university for 39 years in a row.
To help underscore the vital role research continues to play and the importance of the support we receive in federal funding, the university hosted the Hopkins on the Hill showcase in June 2017. Early career researchers and practitioners who have received federal funding for their work at Johns Hopkins gathered in Washington, D.C., to demonstrate their impact and the extraordinary ways they are advancing discovery for the good of our world. The participants represented divisions across the JHU enterprise, including the Applied Physics Laboratory, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Carey Business School, Jhpiego, the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, the Peabody Institute, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, and the Whiting School of Engineering.
Guiding those young researchers is the Research Development Team, which promotes and supports collaborative research across disciplines, schools, and institutions by assisting project teams with large-scale proposal development. The team was launched in 2018 by Denis Wirtz, the university’s vice provost for research, and is led by Sue Porterfield, associate vice provost for research, to help faculty learn about large collaborative external funding opportunities.
